Josephine Booth: A Force of Nature
Josephine Aboitiz-Booth with mother, Maria Montenegro-Aboitiz, who founded Mehitabel and exported furniture to the US in the late 1940s through a partnership with John and Elinor McGuire.
Josephine Aboitiz-Booth took over Mehitabel, which began producing and exporting rattan furniture in the late 1940s, when her mother, Maria Montenegro-Aboitiz, retired in 1969. Josephine tackled not only the day-to-day challenges of running a furniture manufacturing company, but also many concerns that affected an entire industry’s value chain.
Josephine fearlessly brought to public attention many of these concerns, including the unregulated exportation of rattan, inspiring other industry players to band and form the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation in 1974.
